Legacy 2007 Unveiled.

On
Saturday 18 August 2007 at midday in the Reception area
of the Emergency Department at the Royal Liverpool University
Hospital, the donation of art collection for Transvoyeur
Legacy 2007 was unveiled by Roger Phillips from the
BBC Radio Merseyside with Peter Burdett-Smith, the Clinical
Director, Gaynor Evelyn Sweeney and Tony Knox from Transvoyeur.
This
initiative was brought forward by Gaynor Evelyn Sweeney,
the UK Projects Co-ordinator and founding artist from
Transvoyeur, an international arts collective based
in Liverpool. It was discovered through her initial
discourse with Peter Burdett-Smith from the department
that there had never been a fundraiser or donation of
a collection of art before. This gave the impetus to
Transvoyeur to pursue this as an initiative, not only
of historical relevance, but to raise the profile of
the Emergency Department’s professional commitment
and support to the city of Liverpool.
Tony
Knox was the assigned Curator to the project and artists
from Lithuania, China to Garston contributed art to
form the collection of twenty-six pieces. Roger Phillips,
BBC Radio Merseyside, has supported this project from
the onset of the charity art auction through to the
final donation.
The
initial launch of the project was to raise the profile
of the Emergency Department through a charity art auction
and raised about £2000. This is the first time
in the history of the Emergency Department the auction
and donation has happened. The final stage was to bestow
the collection of art to improve the experience of the
public spaces and the medical environment.
This
unifies a common objective in the professional relationship
of arts, medicine and the communities to impart a ‘Legacy’
to the city of Liverpool and the hospital prior to the
European Capital of Culture 2008 on display for future
generations.
Sweeney
opened the unveiling by introducing the event, herself,
her colleague, Roger Phillips and Peter Burdett-Smith.
Phillips followed on to announce the unveiling: “
… art is really important for feeling healthy
and some wonderful art work has now arrived in the department
today, which really help people a little bit better
when they come in here”.

Burdett-Smith
added: “I would like thank everyone involved in
the project, Gaynor, Tony and Roger and for all his
help; and of course all the artists who have donated
their work, because of course without this project would
never have got off the ground … it is quite unique
this, because we are probably the busiest department
in the hospital seeing 250 patients every day and we
very rarely get any recognition with charitable donation
like this … It really has made a big difference
… we have benefited twice really from the funds
of the auction to buy equipment to improve our service
and also the art work itself brightens up the department
and provide a real talking point”.
Sweeney
later added: “The entire project has been rewarding,
indeed a learning curve … it has been a worthwhile
and enlightening exchange and I hope so equally for
the medical staff too, as it has been for us artists.
Moreover though, the historical significance to us is
important, as it has never been done before and this
gives it even more relevance when one considers the
exceptional work the Emergency Department does”.
