Research
and Development
The
research in the development of Transvoyeur is founded
on the culture and multi-disciplinary based established
around visual literacy and the impact of forms of thinking
and working, play a significant role in society. Drawing
up on the culture institutions and groups within the city
and the intellectual resources and, Transvoyeur balances
theoretical accounts of visual culture with the application
of these perspectives of visual representations in various
contexts, e.g., contemporary visual arts, new technologies
and media, the material culture of the city, museum display,
gallery curation, community initiatives, etc., with the
objective of research and development in the contemporary
culture.
Transvoyeur acts as focus for the research and practice
across the visual field, the implications of art and collaborations
which form innovation in culture. Critical approaches
to the concept and context in the reference source of
the metropolis. Cultural democracy and socially engaged
art practice. Transvoyeur is to present a partnership
and unification with the artists, institutions and groups
which form the city. It is support a diverse range of
research areas and practices in the study of contemporary
visual and cultural activity and its intersection with
other disciplines.
Research Aims and Objectives
The principal research involves some aspect of cultural
practice. This is either addressed in the creative work,
as practice based research, or through the analysis of
cultural activities. In particular this includes work
with a range of institutions and groups through out the
city and applied from the conventional to new technologies
and contemporary media practices. While Transvoyeur endorses
the creative practice, it also emphasizes the critical
study of projects as they are developed. In many case
of critical analysis of the projects and the processes
that have lead to them provide significant contribution
to possible under explored areas of arts.
In a similar way, while Transvoyeur is keen to support
interdisciplinary research it also encourages a rigorous
examination of the process involved in collaboration and
how outcomes of the research are presented and perceived
within the context of cultural practice and social and
civic implications. Other research work by Transvoyeur
involves dialogue between the artists and curatorial researchers,
but also institutions and groups through out the city,
addressing how material has been collected and it is represented,
an as such may involve the participation in the research
with the institutions and groups.
The output of the research from Transvoyeur will be varied,
according to the form of work. They include exhibitions,
performances, websites and other creative productions
as well as publications, conferences and presentations.
Fundamentally, Transvoyeur supports a diverse range of
research areas and practices in the study of contemporary
visual ad cultural activity and its intersection with
other disciplines.
Transvoyeur has adopted a research-informed approach to
the development of knowledge and creativity in the contemporary
arts. The objective of Transvoyeur is to demonstrate the
process of that for the most part the analysis and study
in contemporary art do not necessarily work from the sort
of design principles of reflecting the extensive cultural
spectrum within the urban environment, not only historical
and referential, but current and happening in front of
us. This does not mean Transvoyeur abandons the theoretical
and institutionalised, but recognises the gap between
current thinking and practices and the greater spectrum
of the cultural environment in contemporary society, from
the canon to the communal. Understanding how we can encourage
the development of this culture is an important focus
for our learning and development in the contemporary arts
and society.
The information Transvoyeur intends to provide is not
a substitute for the academic or cultural discourse or
publications, but to engage the diverse groups of the
city with the institutions, through the creative process
and related critical analysis in this development. The
information will be one in context of learning about the
culture we inhabit and manifest within the socio-cultural
structure of the urban environment and to have relevance
to the communal and academic as a whole.
The
principle areas recognised for the research and development
of the launch of Transvoyeur are:
• The visualisation of information and critical
analysis of culture.
• Studies of interdisciplinary processes and practices.
• Display, presentation and curatorial practices.
• A platform of art, culture and the city in a post-modern
society.
These
areas will be considered by each artists and researcher
in terms of the urban environment, considering the socio-historical
and cultural relations from their own experiences and
city space to one of a more global significance. This
is scheduled as follows:
Research and Development of Art
The research and development of the art is founded on
the previous experience and knowledge of the artist, but
further in the conscious analysis of the urban environment
of the city, contemplating alternative reference sources
to form new concepts and contextualisation in their art
practice and mode of expression. This critical analysis
is one expanding from the self to the spatial and temporal
relevance in the manifestation of innovation in their
creativity, as well as consultation and dialogue between
associate artists, institutions and groups within the
city.
Critical Analysis of Art and Culture
It is advocated in the research and development the process
the artists pursue is not merely one of exploring the
references from the urban space within their practice,
but to become actively involved in the dialogue and the
critical analysis of art and culture within the city,
interrelated to their own art, but expounding to one of
what constitutes art and culture in the city. This critical
analysis is one initiated between the artists and the
city they live in the primary research and discourse,
but to then expand their explorations to the global relations.
The Exhibitions
The exhibitions of Transvoyeur in the launch year are
a visual documentations and innovations to contemporary
arts and conceived from the concepts\ideas of the socio-urban
environment. It will be a collection of visual information
relevant to the audience of the city and deliberated to
be representative, empathic and symbiotic to the socio-cultural
environment of the city, intended for recognition of the
urban space and to promote a cultural enlightenment.
The Symposium
A platform and resource culminating the research and development
to the contemporary arts and culture, but annotated in
the socio-cultural precepts and conventions of the post-modern
city, such being examined from the research compiled and
the art create and evaluated with an open forum with the
artist, researchers and the audience. The audience targeted
are members of the community, arts and institutions, who
primarily would have been considered in the research and
development of the arts and constitute the city.
Publication: Transvoyeur
The publication of Transvoyeur is a multi-disciplinary
reference based developed for the purpose of visual literacy
and the significance of visual forms of conceptualising
and working in the role of society. It is a collection
of cultural and intellectual resources to balance the
theoretical accounts of visual culture with the application
of these learnt perspectives to visual representation
in various contexts. It is an recognition of the urban
environment, not only to the artists and the researchers,
but moreover the socio-historical environment of the city,
founded on the contemporary influences in the post-modern
spaces and cultures, including the communal and institutional
of contemporary visual arts and the material culture of
the city. The terrestrial of the temporal and spatial
germane to all in the urban environment, whether in popular
culture or cultural heritage. The publication is a reference
source of the people and the place and the cultural expressions
which denotes their co-existence in the multi-cultural
setting of urban life, as well as their individualism
integral to the universality of the human condition. Therefore,
the end product of this publication will be targeted to
a wide range of outlets in the cities, communities and
institutions, and a continuation of the collective research,
development and erudition in the contemporary arts and
culture.
Website: Transvoyeur
The objectives of the Transvoyeur website are to be informative
and accessible to a wide range of institutions and groups
in the cities and globally. It will be a data bank of
the research and development on the visualisation of information
and critical analysis of culture in the two cities. It
will present the interdisciplinary processes and practices
in contemporary art and the display and presentation.
It will be a virtual platform of art, culture and the
city in a post modern society, including references and
acknowledgements to the groups and institutions in the
urban fabric. The website will not only represent the
artists and researchers and the various groups and institutions
of the cities, but moreover act as a forum to continue
dialogue on the principle objectives of Transvoyeur, with
the purpose of erudition and growth, enabling further
realisations and developments and the opportunity to expand
Transvoyeur to other prospective groups and institutions.
The aim of the website is thus to increase access to and
participation in the arts and culture. It will draw its
materials from the research and development of Transvoyeur,
which is founded on dialogue and references of groups
and institutions which form the city, including communities,
museums, galleries, libraries, academic, broadcast and
film materials, the visual arts and culture. The website
will be a recognition of the multi-cultural fabric of
the city, both individually, groups and institutions.
It will provide a wealth of cultural material to support
and enhance the research of others on the city and access
to arts and cultural to people who might not normally
think of visiting a gallery. It will overall encourage
people to participate in the arts and to contribute to
the creation of new material and resources.
Examples of Past Research and Development: Collaboration
and Art
The exchange in the dialogue by the artist formulated
new and innovative concepts, philosophies and modes of
expression in their art. An example of which was realised
between several of the artists and considered the ideas
of gender and ethnic politics in a place, e.g.:
Collaboration between Kofi Fosu (New York) and Gaynor
Evelyn Sweeney (Liverpool) expanded on the dialogue to
produce a live art intervention. This explored the concepts
of an African American male in post modern society and
the canon of the white female body, both reflected to
the institutionalised precepts of westernised art history.
The creative practice one manifested by the philosophical
texts of Fosu and embodied in the performance by Sweeney.
The final presentation was at the Walker Art Gallery,
Liverpool, England.

Other
similar collaborations transpired over the course of the
year in 2004. Another example is observed in the subject
of George Lund's art which explored the themes of global
identity in an historical and contemporary context. A
fusion of multi cultural hybridity.

Opportunities
were presented to artists in both Liverpool and New York
to show their art to alternative audiences in either city,
such as the exhibitions curated by Tony Knox in the Egg
Space Gallery (Liverpool, England). As with many of the
independent projects by the members of the collective
of Transvoyeur, these were opened up to others, including
advocation of other submissions internationally. The audience
of Liverpool had a chance to view art from the global
art market and further enabled artists to submit to a
large scale exhibition conceived and curated by Knox.
