Statement
The
constant transformation and mutation of society occurs
consistently through generations and cultures. The key
elements comprising of people, language, architecture
and the environment are what define imagery and visualisation.
With
straight and geometrical shapes I create what can be
interpreted as the architectural elements, with softness
and non-uniform abstract shapes reflecting the environment.
The challenge in my work as it is in the true sense,
is the creation of a successful and harmonious relationship.
The use of dynamic composition breathes life into the
work representing the presence and influence of society.
People and their actions are what sculpt our society,
but in many ways the environment and architecture are
the foundations on which it is built.
I
am also studying the transformation of language, how
every language can change through the years, how every
generation can influence a language, adding new words
and creating new dialects. I have found this idea to
be compatible with my work exploring architecture and
the environment. Their relationship is often manipulated
and used to communicate the cultural heritage and characteristics
of its creators and inhabitants, a basic form of language
through visual representation.
My
art is a reflection of what I think and feel. I love
the infinite possibilities for creating relationships
and reactions within my work from a combination of key
elements that are fundamental to everyone. My compositions
derive order form their structured make up combined
with the fluidity of their foundation. Art is a powerful
communication force, not only for the artist but also
for the art viewer. With art we can over come different
languages, cultures and divisions in society. The communicating
begins the moment we take control of our beliefs and
ideas.
Biography
Daiva
Gauryte is a Liverpool based artist who moved here from
her native country of Lithuania in the early part of
2005, the decision to live and establish her art practice
in Liverpool came about after a 3 month stay in the
city the previous year. Daiva was born in Ukmerge, Lithuania
in 1982 at a time when the country was still part of
the Soviet Union. As one of 2 daughters she was raised
by her parents in a predominately rural environment,
living a traditional Lithuanian working class life.
While
at secondary school Daiva attended Art School in Ukmerge,
classes were run on a daily basis after regular school
had finished. She studied the first basics and fundamentals
and developed an understanding and passion for art.
Taking it very seriously she began arranging exhibitions
within the local community. After completing secondary
school, she made the move from a small town to the city
to study Fine Art and Design at Siauliai University
(Lithuania) 2000-2005.
Daiva’s
theoretical and practical knowledge of Fine Art was
moulded during an intensive five-year academic programme,
from which she graduated with a first-class degree.
Her natural ability was developed working with range
of genres such as: anatomy, portraits, landscapes and
still life; and different fields like: painting, graphics,
sculpture, photography and graphic design. During these
years she was involved in the local art scene, organising
and promoting exhibitions for students and local artists
as well as her own. These included a Photography exhibition
‘Retrospective’ in Siauliai Photography
museum (Lithuania), 2003, and the ‘New graduates
exhibition’ in Siauliai University Gallery (Lithuania),
2005.
From
quite early on one of her main ambitions was to visit
other countries and experience the different cultures
and environments, studying the influences these had
on art. After time spent in America, England, Holland
and Egypt, an attachment developed to exploring the
relationships between architecture and the environment.
The multitude of experiences has had a significant impact
on the artists understanding of people and their environment
and the fundamentals that define cultures and societies.
She
is currently Studying for an MA in Fine Art by Creative
Practice at Liverpool Hope University. Her current practice
involves the use of various drawing techniques, mainly
using pencil, graphite powder, pastels or ink to explore
a concept of language through visual interpretation,
alleging that language is not just something that can
be simply translated, but can also be represented through
created imagery, particularly when it involves the relationship
between the built and the natural environment.
Daiva
has taken part in a number exhibitions in Liverpool,
including most recently a Transvoyeur Charity Art Auction
in aid of the Emergency department Royal Liverpool University
Hospital, in the View Two Gallery, May 2007 (UK), and
the MA by Creative Practice Interim exhibition ‘Work
In Progress’, South Bohemia Art Gallery, June
2007 (UK).
